Wasn’t it just yesterday that the Adalberokirche stood as a proud testament to the artistry of Würzburg? Its imposing neo-Romanesque architecture a beacon in Sanderau. This wasn’t just any church. This was the Adalberokirche. The Sanderauer Dom. A magnificent basilica built between 1894 and 1899. Designed by Franz Josef Ritter von Denzinger. He was a renowned master builder responsible for the reconstruction of Frankfurt’s Kaiserdom and the Dreikönigskirche. The Adalberokirche wasn’t just a building project. It was a collaborative effort. All the sculptors and painters in Würzburg contributed to its breathtaking interior.

The story of the Adalberokirche is deeply intertwined with the history of Sanderau. This district needed a church to serve its growing population. The church is dedicated to Saint Adalbero of Würzburg. He was a bishop during the Investiture Controversy. The Adalberokirche is the only church in Germany dedicated to this significant figure.

Architect Joseph Schmitz masterfully used Franconian shell limestone. The church’s location on terraced land created a striking presence. Its features are distinct. A transept a Vierungsoktogon and a captivating twin-tower facade all exemplify neo-Romanesque style. Unfortunately World War II inflicted significant damage. The church was severely damaged by bombing in 1945. Despite the devastation altars the Stations of the Cross and other precious works survived.

Post-war restoration was a long process. It spanned the 1980s and 1990s. The Vierungsturm was meticulously restored to its original condition. Original vaulting replaced provisional flat ceilings. The exterior stonework was repaired. The facade was cleaned. In 1992 and 1993 plain windows were replaced by new artistic creations from Wladimir Olenburg.

The Adalberokirche boasts a remarkable Rensch organ. This instrument installed in 1995 after the church’s renovation has 52 registers across three manuals and a pedal. The massive case is crafted from fir and pine. The colorful design matches the church’s windows a testament to the continued artistic contributions to the building. The Schiestl brothers also left their mark. Their collaborative St Anna altar is a masterpiece. Matthäus created the mosaic Rudolf the angel figures and Heinz the figure of Saint Anna.

The five bells of the Adalberokirche each carry their story. Three cast in 1954 by Otto in Bremen Hemelingen and another by Rudolf Perner in Passau in 1992. A fifth bell by the Gebrüder Klaus from Heidingsfeld dating back to 1930 completes the set. Their combined sound a testament to time and devotion. This is more than just a church. It’s a story of faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Würzburg. A story whispered in shell limestone and sung by its bells. A story you can feel standing here in front of the Adalberokirche.
