“Want to witness a unique form of artistic expression?” Here stands Act Theatre. It is an independent group of artists in Warsaw. The theatre was established in 1991. It quickly started developing its own theatrical language.
Act Theatre grew from the tradition of the “Polish school of pantomime”. The artists came from the Pantomime School at the Jewish Theater in Warsaw. Agnieszka Musiałowicz, Marek Kowalski, and Tomasz Musiałowicz were among them.
The group’s artistic language is based on the art of mime and gesture. It also uses plastic images. Elements of circus and dance complement it. Act Theatre’s performances include street theatre elements. These include interactive and happening activities. They also feature humor. This humor maintains an absurd tone.
Street performances led actors to seek new means of expression. The theatre has many stage and outdoor performances. It also performs street parades and fire shows. They create art projects for cultural events. The spectacles often draw from fairy tales and mythology. Examples include Perperuna, Lewiatan, and The Brave Lead Soldier. The theatre also uses serious literary material. This includes T. S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land” and Charles Baudelaire’s “Flowers of Evil”.
Besides theatrical activity, the theatre works commercially. It organizes artistic settings for events, galas, conferences, and fairs. With the City of Warsaw, the theatre organized the Czarna Offca theatre review. It is financed by grants and its own income. It operates within the Act Theatre Association.

Since its first performance, Act Theatre has enriched pantomime. It brings it closer to contemporary theatre. Examples include “Death Do Not Tell Tales” and “From The Darkness I Called”. In 1992, Act Theatre created pantomime fairy tales for children. “Where is Little Piu?” and “Wind Tales” were warmly received. Act Theatre became a traveling troupe. It started touring in Poland and abroad.
From 1992 to 1994, the company created its first outdoor plays. These were inspired by street theatre. Performances are often based on audience contact. Improvisation occurs between actors and the audience.
The theatre prepared bigger street performances. “Perperuna” returns to Slavic roots. “Leviathan” transfers a biblical myth to the modern world. The next performance is based on Andersen’s “Brave Lead Soldier”. “Feniks” travels among characters of Slavic and Polish history.
Other performances include “Chick-Stick” from 2004 and “At Sea 44 l.p.” also from 2004. “Icarus” appeared in 2005. “Waste Land” by T.S. Elliot was in 2005 too. “OR” came in 2006 and “Football Match” in 2008. “The Curator’s Dream” also appeared in 2008. Act Theatre has been recognized by critics. It has received many prizes and awards.
