Academy of Fine Arts

Established by an imperial decree in 1799, the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague stands as a testament to artistic pursuit. Initially founded as an academy of drawing, the Academy of Fine Arts quickly expanded. It embraced architecture, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague isn’t just a historical landmark. It is the oldest art college in the Czech Republic. The Academy of Fine Arts has played a crucial role in the Czech Republic’s art scene. It promotes both traditional and contemporary art forms. In 1990, under the leadership of Milan Knizhak, the Academy of Fine Arts underwent significant reforms. These reforms reorganized the school’s concept and internal structure, introducing new media programs like film and computer animation by 1991. Today, the Academy of Fine Arts remains an accredited university. It offers a diverse range of master’s and doctoral programs. The Academy of Fine Arts provides instruction in both modern and historical art. Interestingly, as a graduate-exclusive institution, the Academy of Fine Arts lacks student accommodation or on-campus dining. International programs are primarily offered in Czech, with a limited selection of classes in English. The Academy of Fine Arts houses various departments. These include Architecture, Art in Context (with an English program), Drawing, Figural Sculpture and Medal, Intermedia, New Media, Printmaking, Painting, and Sculpture Restoration.
