“One more night with the frogs.” That’s a sermon title The Rev. David Shoaf once shared at Abundant Life Assembly of God Church. It offers a glimpse into the church’s engaging approach to faith. Abundant Life Assembly of God Church stands as a beacon of faith in Lithia. Its roots trace back to the early 20th century.
Imagine this: It all began around 1905. Some of the area’s first Methodist settlers experienced an internal disagreement. They split from the majority. Hiram Alderman and C.A. Freeman led this new group. They formed a new church. The original building stood on Alderman’s property. This was along what is now Browning Street.
Later, the church relocated. They needed a new building. O.L. Bryant, a trustee, donated wood from his sawmill. At that time, the church was known as Lithia Holiness. In November 1935, a significant decision was made. The congregation voted to join the South Florida District Council of the Assemblies of God. The present building was erected in 1972. The church then became Abundant Life Assembly of God.
David Shoaf led the church for almost four years. He hailed from North Carolina. He studied music and the Bible in Lakeland. This was at Southeastern College. He met his wife, Susan, there. He graduated in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in Bible. Before becoming pastor, he worked in mental health services. David and Susan have four children.
