Abisso presso S. Croce

Deep within the earth, near the school of Santa Croce, lies the Abisso presso S. Croce. This cave is more than just a hole in the ground. It’s a journey into the heart of the earth, a descent into a world of darkness, danger, and breathtaking beauty. The entrance to Abisso presso S. Croce is concealed within a sinkhole, hidden amidst the trees. Its name, “Abisso presso S. Croce,” perfectly captures its location near the Santa Croce area. The cave is a series of vertical shafts, or “pozzi,” formed along fractures running east-west and northeast-southwest. These fractures tell a tale of the earth’s movements, of the forces that have shaped this landscape over millions of years. At a depth of 63 meters, the Abisso presso S. Croce presents a formidable challenge. A narrow passage, strenuous even for experienced cavers, leads to a 22-meter pozzo. This passage, a test of both physical and mental endurance, marks a turning point in the descent. From the base of the P22, the Abisso presso S. Croce branches into three distinct paths. To the north, a sequence of pozzi plunges to a depth of 116 meters, where a small, unexplored shaft hints at further depths. To the south, a descending passage leads to a series of parallel pozzi. To the west, a small drop and a muddy squeeze open into a large pozzo, its walls adorned with enormous, wedged boulders. Beyond this lies another pozzo, P6, its walls richly decorated with calcite formations. A descending passage from P6 leads to a cavern beneath a towering chimney. Here, amidst the boulders, lies the final 13-meter pozzo, splitting into two branches before rejoining at the bottom. From this point, a distinctive black meandering passage, likely formed in marl, leads to a small branch terminating in a narrow fissure. The Abisso presso S. Croce is not for the faint of heart. It’s a muddy, challenging cave with numerous narrow passages. The presence of unstable rockfalls and precarious boulders poses significant dangers. Despite these challenges, the Abisso presso S. Croce offers a unique glimpse into the hidden world beneath our feet.
