Slipping through a break in the trees, we find Abisso presso Opicina Campagna. It’s also known as Fovea Persefone. This isn’t just a hole in the ground. It’s a 150-meter deep abyss, a portal to another world. The mouth of Abisso presso Opicina Campagna opens wide, a jagged tear in the earth. Imagine standing here in 1898 with the Comitato Grotte del Club Touristi Triestini. They were the first to explore this chasm. They gave it the evocative name Fovea Persefone. Their sketches, published in “Il Tourista,” still hold up today, a testament to their bravery and skill. The descent is a journey into the heart of the earth. The main shaft is split by a rock partition. One side offers a few ledges for a slightly easier descent. The other side plunges straight down. At 110 meters, the path splits. To the south, a small drop leads to a cavern with a debris-filled floor. This continues into a narrow, twisting corridor eventually blocked by clay. To the north, a 25-meter vertical drop opens into a labyrinth of galleries. Some chambers are adorned with massive formations and crystal structures, stalagmites, columns, and curtains in a variety of colors. More recent explorations have revealed further complexities within Abisso presso Opicina Campagna. A 16-meter pozzo opens near a terrace on the south side, followed by another 26-meter drop filled with niches and small openings. Sadly, these don’t lead to new passages. However, a draft of air whispers from a hole near the bottom, hinting at undiscovered spaces. Be aware, this is a challenging and potentially dangerous descent. The path is not always clear. Fallen rocks and debris litter the bottom of the main shaft. Loose rocks and eroded ledges create hazards throughout the cave. This isn’t a place for the faint of heart. Abisso presso Opicina Campagna is a place of natural wonder. It is also a place that demands respect.
