Slipping into the darkness of Abisso Malasuerte, prepare to be amazed. This cave, whose name translates to “Unlucky Abyss,” holds a captivating story. Abisso Malasuerte is located in the heart of Trieste’s Karst region, near Sgonico. Its entrance is discreetly tucked away on the southeastern slope of a large sinkhole, about 700 meters along the SP 7 road from Gabrovizza to Sgonico. This natural wonder boasts a spatial development of 345 meters, plunging to a depth of 128 meters. The journey into Abisso Malasuerte starts with a short, artificially widened, inclined tunnel. This leads to a series of shafts, each with its unique characteristics. The cave features a network of chambers, some formed by erosion, some filled with fallen debris, and some adorned with stunning concretions. As you descend deeper into Abisso Malasuerte, you’ll encounter narrow fissures, expansive halls, and a final chamber with clay deposits shaped by dripping water. Exploring this cave is a thrilling adventure. Be prepared for a challenging descent, as some sections require careful navigation due to unstable materials. The cave was discovered by Claudio De Filippo of the Gruppo Grotta Continua. The first survey, mapping the cave’s intricate passages, was completed on November 22, 2014.
