To make exploration safer workers dug an artificial shaft. This 13-meter shaft led to the top of the large chamber. The initial exploration didn’t yield the expected results. There was disappointment at not finding the underground water. This water was thought to exist given nearby springs.
After the 1906 exploration quarrying continued. The entrance was enlarged. It became easy to dispose of quarry debris. Later visits showed changes. The ascending gallery discovered by Boegan had disappeared. The 110-meter shaft was reduced to 80 meters. The rising of the bottom revealed a previously inaccessible passage. This passage allows a descent to a depth of 110 meters. This is by way of a crumbling shaft and steps formed by collapsed material.
The Abisso della Cava di Boschetti has two entrances. Entrance 1 is the original natural opening. It is accessible via an opening in the metal fence. A considerable amount of loose material covers the inclined corridor leading to the deep shaft. It makes the descent very dangerous. Entrance 2 is artificial. It was dug later to make material recovery easier.
Today the Abisso della Cava di Boschetti is less polluted. It offers a pleasant descent. About 120 meters of rope are needed. The initial slope demands caution. The Abisso della Cava di Boschetti’s planimetric development is 112 meters. Its spatial development is 185 meters. Its total depth is 111 meters. It’s a testament to the powerful forces of nature.
