Journey with me to the edge of the Abisso del Vecio. This isn’t just a hole in the ground. The Abisso del Vecio is a doorway to another world, a world of darkness and echoes. It’s a world that whispers secrets of time and geology. The Abisso del Vecio is located in a sinkhole. You can find it near the path of an old pipeline. The entrance is a fracture in the earth. This fracture runs northwest to southeast. At the base of the first shaft, the walls are smooth and polished. From here, a narrow passage leads west. This passage opens into another shaft, a 14.5-meter drop adorned with flowstone. Small, blind chambers branch off from this second shaft. The Abisso del Vecio isn’t a single, straight path. It’s a labyrinth of shafts and passages. Back at the base of the entrance shaft, another 8.5-meter shaft plunges downward. It ends abruptly. The second shaft continues, leading to a 4.4-meter drop, a tunnel heading south, and yet another shaft, this one 12.8 meters deep and heavily decorated with formations. From the bottom of this shaft, a climb of a couple of meters reveals a window. This window leads to an ascending passage. This passage ends in a high chimney. Returning to the bottom of the shaft and heading southeast, another shaft descends 26 meters. Its bottom is a long, sloping platform cluttered with large boulders. Beyond these, another shaft drops 16.4 meters to yet another platform. A small, 4.2-meter drop then leads to a floor dotted with impassable crevices. The 26-meter and 16.4-meter shafts are corroded and wet, a stark contrast to the dry, flowstone-covered shafts above. The Abisso del Vecio continues to twist and turn. From the bottom of the 16.4-meter shaft, a 3-meter climb is followed by a 6.4-meter drop into a muddy, corroded passage. Two more shafts follow. They are 11.4 meters and 4.2 meters deep. A 1.6-meter drop leads to a short meandering passage heading northwest. This passage ends at the bottom of a parallel shaft filled with unstable boulders. Among these boulders are the openings of more shafts. One, to the west, is 3 meters deep. Another, reached through a narrow passage, is unexplored due to the danger of falling rocks. A third shaft, 34.6 meters deep and heavily corroded, opens to the west-northwest. Its bottom leads through a tight squeeze to a penultimate shaft, 11 meters deep. It’s divided by a natural bridge. Its base is a sloping platform that leads to a difficult 6-meter-long tunnel. At the end of this tunnel lies the final 6-meter shaft, its bottom choked with rubble. The Abisso del Vecio isn’t just rock and void. It holds the remnants of ancient life. Fossils of gastropods and echinoids have been found at various depths, silent witnesses to a time long past. Thin layers of coal, hidden deep within the final shaft, hint at even older secrets. The Abisso del Vecio is more than just a cave. It is a journey through time, a testament to the power of nature, a hidden world waiting to be explored, but only by the most intrepid adventurers.
