Descending into darkness, we find ourselves at the entrance of Abisso a W di Fernetti. This isn’t just a hole in the ground. It’s a gateway to another world. Abisso a W di Fernetti, located northeast of the railway line crossing the Fernetti plain, near the pine forest. The cave’s entrance, artificially widened, leads into the first shaft. Beyond this, a passage was cleared to a second shaft, 10 meters deep. This shaft starts very narrow. Its base is a landing, the top of a huge natural bridge dividing the next shaft below. From this point, the western side offers the best route. A 30-meter shaft descends to the bottom of a large cavern. The cavern floor slopes steeply north and south. It’s filled with clay deposits and large fallen rocks. To the east lies the entrance to the fourth shaft. Also cleared of numerous boulders, this shaft descends 18 meters. It opens into the second part of Abisso a W di Fernetti, primarily horizontal in nature. Along this concretioned gallery, several pools of clear water add to the beauty. Small shafts branch off: one 5 meters deep, another 12 meters, and a third at 7 meters. Near the gallery’s center, a series of shafts descend 10, 18, and 9 meters, respectively. These lead to the cave’s deepest point, 92 meters down. At this bottom, an impassable fissure stops further exploration. The narrow passages in the first part of Abisso a W di Fernetti and the presence of loose rocks make exploration challenging.
