Whispering winds carry tales of resilience in Aberdeen Country Park. Here, amidst the lush greenery, lies a story of rebirth. Aberdeen Country Park stands as a testament to nature’s enduring power. Once ravaged by the Japanese occupation during World War II, the park’s trees were decimated for fuelwood. The landscape was scarred, a stark reminder of conflict. But from the ashes of destruction, life emerged anew. Through dedicated reforestation efforts and the inherent resilience of nature, Aberdeen Country Park was reborn. The once barren hillsides now boast a vibrant tapestry of trees. Towering Brisbane boxes, elegant schima, fragrant gordonia, ivy trees, and rose myrtle paint the landscape in shades of green. The park stretches across 423 hectares, embracing rolling hills, tranquil reservoirs, and a rich biodiversity. Aberdeen Country Park isn’t just about flora. It’s a haven for wildlife too. The skies above are patrolled by majestic black kites, their wingspans reaching an impressive 1.5 meters. These birds of prey often congregate at dusk, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Listen closely, and you might hear the melodic calls of greater coucals, Chinese hwamei, magpies, and kingfishers. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a pangolin or a squirrel darting through the undergrowth. The two reservoirs within the park, Aberdeen Upper and Lower Reservoirs, hold another layer of history. Completed in 1931, they were the last reservoirs built by the government on Hong Kong Island. Originally a private reservoir owned by the Tai Shing Paper Manufacturing Company, the Lower Reservoir was later purchased and converted for public use. Today, these reservoirs, encircled by dense forests, provide a serene backdrop for leisurely walks along the Aberdeen Nature Trail. This trail meanders around the lower reservoir, offering interpretive plaques that unveil the park’s natural and historical wonders. Aberdeen Country Park caters to all, with accessible picnic areas and trails designed for wheelchair users. It’s a place where families gather, hikers explore, and nature lovers find solace. As you wander through the park, imagine the echoes of the past mingling with the vibrant energy of the present. Aberdeen Country Park is a living testament to the power of renewal, a place where history and nature intertwine to create an unforgettable experience.
