Picture the year 1873. A new adobe structure rises on the Fort Marcy Military Reservation. This is the beginning of the A. M. Bergere House’s story. It was one of six officers’ quarters. Only one other remains.

The A. M. Bergere House served its purpose. It housed military officers. Then in 1894 the reservation closed. The house became a residence for influential New Mexicans. For almost eighty years the Luna Otero and Bergere families called it home. These families were prominent in New Mexico’s history.

Imagine life within those adobe walls. Eloisa Otero a powerful woman lived there. Her daughter Nina Otero Warren became a suffragist. They were part of a legacy. This house was a center of political and social activity.

In 1924 a major renovation occurred. A flat roof was added. A sunroom and garage were built. The style changed to reflect the popular Spanish-Pueblo style. The A. M. Bergere House adapted to the times. It kept its charm.

Today the house stands as a testament to history. It has new purpose. In 2001 it housed the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s offices. This includes the Michael S Engl Family Foundation Library. This library supports research into Georgia O’Keeffe and her contemporaries.
