2nd Battalion 1st Marines

On a sweltering August day in 1922, amidst the vibrant chaos of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the 2nd Battalion 1st Marines first took shape. Initially known as the 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment, they became part of the 2nd Brigade, tasked with maintaining order during the U.S. occupation. Their presence resonated through the streets, a mix of authority and uncertainty. This marked the beginning of a legacy for the 2nd Battalion 1st Marines, a legacy forged in far-flung corners of the world. The battalion’s early years were a whirlwind of deployments and deactivations. Reactivated in 1941 at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, then briefly at Parris Island, South Carolina, the 2nd Battalion 1st Marines found their true calling in the crucible of World War II. Reactivated once more in 1942, they shipped out to Wellington, New Zealand, stepping into the vast and volatile Pacific Theater. From the embattled shores of Guadalcanal, where they held Henderson Field against relentless Japanese attacks, to the brutal fight for Cape Gloucester, where they faced down banzai charges, the 2nd Battalion 1st Marines became hardened veterans. They fought on Peleliu, enduring heavy losses in the Umurbrogal Pocket. Their final WWII campaign was Okinawa, a battle etched in mud and rain, culminating in the hard-won victory at Shuri. After the war’s end, they served in Tiensin, China as part of the occupation force. The Korean War saw the 2nd Battalion 1st Marines reactivated again, this time at Camp Lejeune. They shipped out to Kobe, Japan, then on to Korea, fighting at Inchon-Seoul, the frozen Chosin Reservoir, and along the East Central and Western Fronts. One remarkable engagement occurred near Yongdungpo in September 1950. The Marines ambushed a North Korean column, destroying tanks with bazookas and inflicting heavy casualties. After the armistice, they stood guard along the Korean Demilitarized Zone. The 2nd Battalion 1st Marines’ story continued in the jungles of Vietnam, where they arrived in 1965. They fought in operations like Hastings, Union I, and Kentucky, leaving their mark on battles from Hue to Da Nang. Later, they played a role in Operation New Arrivals, helping relocate refugees from war-torn Indochina. The 2nd Battalion 1st Marines would see action again in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan during the Global War on Terrorism. From Operation Vigilant Resolve in Fallujah to Operation Steel Curtain, they fought with tenacity and courage. A tragic chapter was written in Kabul in 2021, where the battalion suffered significant losses in a suicide bombing during the withdrawal from Afghanistan. The 2nd Battalion 1st Marines story, spanning over a century, is etched in sacrifice and bravery. From the Dominican Republic to Afghanistan, their motto, “The Professionals,” has been earned through unwavering dedication.
