“Design is everywhere.” Have you heard that saying? Here at 21_21 Design Sight, you will see that come to life.
21_21 Design Sight is a unique museum in Tokyo. It focuses on the world of design. Architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake created it. They wanted a space to explore design’s potential. It opened in 2007 as part of Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi.
Ando envisioned more than just exhibits. He wanted a place to research design. A place to enrich daily life. 21_21 Design Sight aims to foster public interest. It offers different views of the world. It helps us see the objects around us in new ways.
The building itself is an architectural marvel. Ando’s design features clean lines. It has a minimalist style. The structure includes a split-level concrete design. A hand-sanded steel roof tops it off. Miyake’s A-POC concept inspired the roof. A-POC means “A Piece of Cloth.” Long glass panels connect the inside and outside. These 14-meter panels offer views of the park.
21_21 Design Sight has two main galleries. They are known as GALLERY 1 & 2. These spaces showcase contemporary design and art. The exhibits change often. They celebrate innovative design. Visitors can explore fresh perspectives. They can find inspiration for new ideas. The Main Gallery features rotating exhibits. Each one explores design in many ways. They challenge visitors to see beyond what is ordinary.
Issey Miyake was the founder. Taku Satoh and Naoto Fukasawa are current directors. They envision a space with fresh perspectives. They want to help people appreciate design. Most exhibits focus on everyday life. They explore the hidden world of design. A large part of the gallery is underground.
