In 1941 the 200th originally the 111th Cavalry was federalized. They were sent to the Philippines. They were among the first to fire upon the Japanese. This happened on December 8 1941. They bravely defended the Bataan Peninsula for months.
The Bataan Death March was a harrowing ordeal. Over 75000 American and Filipino soldiers were forced to march 65 miles. This was done with no food or water. Thousands perished. From New Mexico alone 900 soldiers died. Many of them were from the 200th. This unit faced devastating losses during that time.
