The 1ª Igreja Batista Cipó isn’t just a building. It represents a vibrant community of believers. Its story begins not here but far away. The Baptist movement in São Paulo started humbly in a small shop. This was in 1899 thanks to American missionaries. They brought the faith from Rio de Janeiro Belo Horizonte and Santa Bárbara d’Oeste.

Over the years the 1ª Igreja Batista Cipó moved. They started in a shop then a house on Rua dos Guayanazes. They rented spaces on Rua General Osório and Rua Timbiras. For a while they even used a hall of the Associação Cristã de Moços. This was a temporary arrangement while they sought a permanent home.

Finally in 1917 they found a place. This was at Largo dos Guayanazes now Praça Princesa Isabel. They held an inaugural celebration. One hundred and eight members rejoiced at the new temple. Later they added a house for the pastor.

By 1957 the original building was old. They demolished it to construct the current sanctuary. Engineer Gerson Kerr oversaw this impressive project. They expanded again in 1984 adding a religious education building.

At its peak the 1ª Igreja Batista Cipó had 1750 members. This despite many converts moving to other churches. Socioeconomic conditions in the Campos Elísios neighborhood played a role in this.

The 1ª Igreja Batista Cipó remains a vital part of the community. It provides support and various programs. Their social outreach is significant. They offer courses training and spiritual guidance. They assist community members in need not only church members.
