How tall is Tampa’s tallest building? Towering over the city at 579 feet 100 North Tampa holds that title. This impressive skyscraper wasn’t always known by its street address. Initially designed as the Citizens and Southern Bank Plaza it opened in 1992 as the AmSouth Building. AmSouth later merged with Regions Bank leading to another name change. Eventually the building’s owners chose its address 100 North Tampa as its official name.

100 North Tampa is more than just a tall building. Its postmodern architecture is striking. Notice the Gothic-style roof the granite cornices and the impressive setbacks at the 38th and 40th floors. The 40-foot granite arches at the entrances are equally impressive. This building truly is a masterpiece. Its pewter-tinted glass and Spanish Rosa Dante granite facade shine in the Florida sun.

Construction of 100 North Tampa began in May 1990. The project cost a staggering $108 million. The building houses major corporations including Regions Bank American International Group Yara North America KPMG and several prominent law firms like Holland & Knight Foley & Lardner and Turkel Cuva & Barrios. Many people work in this impressive skyscraper.

A fascinating fact is that 100 North Tampa almost lost its title of tallest building in Tampa. In 2006 Trump Tower Tampa was planned. It aimed to surpass 100 North Tampa in height. However soil instability halted construction in 2006 and the project was ultimately canceled. This left 100 North Tampa reigning supreme.

The building has 42 floors and a substantial 552080 square feet of floor area. It is equipped with 15 elevators. This makes navigating the building easy for its many tenants and visitors. At one point AIG owned 100 North Tampa. Later Prudential Financial acquired it in a record-breaking deal. The exact sale price remains undisclosed but investors estimate it was around $150 million a remarkable sum for an office tower in Tampa.
