“Is that bridge named after a temple?” a curious tourist asks, pointing towards Kōenji Bridge. Yes indeed, Kōenji Bridge’s name, like the district it resides in, derives from the Shukuhozan Koenji Temple. Kōenji wasn’t always a bustling Tokyo district. It was once a peaceful farming area known as Ozawa, meaning “little creek.” The area’s destiny shifted in the mid-16th century with the construction of Shukuhozan Koenji Temple. Legend says the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, frequented the temple during his falconry expeditions, solidifying its importance and giving the area its current name, Kōenji. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 forever changed Kōenji. Traders, displaced from devastated downtown Tokyo, flocked to Kōenji, especially with its newly opened train station. The area boomed. Farmers subdivided and leased their land. Businesses sprung up. By the 1950s, Kōenji became a haven for coffee and tea lovers, its kissaten, or traditional cafes, a popular draw. It was around this time that the Awa Odori Festival began, a vibrant celebration brought by those who had relocated from Tokushima. Kōenji Bridge, a seemingly modest structure, became a silent witness to this transformation. While not directly mentioned in surviving historical accounts, it undoubtedly served as a vital link, connecting the old Kōenji with the new. As we stand here today, Kōenji Bridge connects us to that vibrant past. It reminds us of a time when a small farming village transformed into a haven for artists, musicians, and those seeking a unique Tokyo experience. The bridge links not just two physical points, but also two eras of Koenji’s history.
