Did you know that Yoshu-in has a history stretching back centuries? Welcome to Yoshu-in. It is a serene temple with a story of resilience and spiritual significance.

Yoshu-in is a temple of the Soto Zen school. It was founded around 1570 during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Yoshiyama founded it. This makes Yoshu-in a place with deep historical roots.

In 1867 disaster struck. A major fire destroyed Yoshu-in’s buildings. Undeterred the community rebuilt. A temporary main hall was erected in 1870. By 1896 a new main hall stood proudly. Yoshu-in continued to evolve. A new main hall was built in 1977. A new abbot’s residence was added in 2002.

Yoshu-in has a message of enlightenment. We are all children of Buddha. We are born with Buddha-nature. Often we do not realize it. We create our own suffering. Repentance and reliance on Buddha bring peace. It brings joy in serving society. It brings strength to endure hardship. This is the essence of Buddha’s teachings.

Yoshu-in practices unique traditions. They sing chants called Baika-ryu Shigin. These songs honor Buddha. They honor Koso Dogen Zenji and Taiso Keizan Zenji. These are important figures in Soto Zen. Believers engage in faith activities to learn their teachings.

Yoshu-in offers a unique burial option. It is called the Kichijo-to Mausoleum. This provides eternal memorial services. Memorial services are held three times a year. These services are for purchasers and their families. The temple does not discriminate by pre-death religion. After the 13th memorial service remains are scattered. They are buried within the memorial tower.

Yoshu-in is accessible from Tokyo. It is located in Kawasaki City Kanagawa Prefecture. It is near the JR Nanbu Line and Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line. You can reach Yoshu-in by bus.

Yoshu-in is managed by Gaoh-zan Yoshu-in. It offers three types of eternal memorial services. These meet diverse needs. There is Yuen-to Mausoleum. There is Kichijo-to Mausoleum. There is a standard graveyard eternal memorial service. Each offers unique features. Annual management fees are not required.
