Established in 1945 Asagaya College of Art and Design boasts a rich history. It began as the Asagaya Bay Painting Research Institute. The founder Saburo Sanda a renowned artist and member of the Hikarikai art group played a pivotal role. The college’s journey wasn’t always easy. Early years saw numerous changes and expansions. In 1952 Asagaya College of Art and Design received official recognition. A two-year specialized design program started in 1958. Then in 1964 it became an incorporated school. Sanda’s passing that same year resulted in the appointment of a new president. The college continued its evolution. New departments emerged like graphic design. In 1977 it officially became a specialized college under the Private School Act. Through the decades Asagaya College of Art and Design added new departments and programs. This reflects the changing landscape of art and design. In 1991 a new department was established. A research center opened in 1993. The college celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1995. Further expansion continued. In 2005 a new department focused on time-space design emerged. The 60th anniversary was marked with celebrations in 2005. The college also actively fostered collaborations with other institutions internationally. This broadened the horizons for students and faculty. Asagaya College of Art and Design continues to shape the future of art and design in Japan. Its history is a testament to its commitment to creativity and innovation.
