Gazing upon Chōkokuji Temple, imagine a single camphor tree, so immense, it birthed two majestic Kannon statues. Chōkokuji Temple, nestled in Tokyo’s Minato ward, holds a connection to a sister statue and a tale of miraculous journeys. This Buddhist temple, also known as Hasedera, shares its name and a fascinating legend with Hasedera Temple in Kamakura. The story begins in 721, with the monk Tokudo Shonin discovering a colossal camphor tree in Nara. He carved two Kannon statues, one from each half of the tree. The smaller statue remained in Nara. The larger, however, embarked on a remarkable voyage. Cast into the sea, it drifted, guided by prayers, until it washed ashore near Kamakura in 736. This very statue, a towering 9.18 meters of gilded wood, became the centerpiece of Hasedera Temple in Kamakura. While Chōkokuji in Tokyo doesn’t house this specific Kannon, the shared name and legend suggest a deep spiritual connection. Perhaps monks from Kamakura’s Hasedera established Chōkokuji, bringing the story and reverence for Kannon with them. This temple in Tokyo invites quiet contemplation, a moment to reflect on the journey of faith and the power of shared stories.
