“Did you know that a temple exists almost hidden between the bustling districts of Shibuya, Roppongi and Aoyama?” That’s Chokokuji Temple. It is a Soto Zen temple founded in 1598. The original buildings faced destruction during World War II. The temple you see today is a reconstruction.

The Hatto serves as the main hall of Chokokuji Temple. Another important structure is the Sodo. Monks use the Sodo hall to practice Zazen.
Inside the Kannondo, you will find a remarkable sight. A 10-meter wooden statue of Kannon stands tall. Kannon is a Buddhist divinity of mercy. The statue’s gender is unknown. You can offer prayers to Kannon freely. The hall is open from 6 am to 5 pm.
