Ever wondered where the trains that whisk you across Tokyo’s sprawling network spend their downtime?

Welcome to the Kamakura Shinkansen Depot Nakahara Substation a hidden marvel nestled near the bustling heart of Tokyo. This isn’t just any train depot. It’s a vital hub for the South Ward Line and the Yokosuka Line. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of these busy commuter lines.

This substation is a key player in JR East’s operations. It meticulously maintains and repairs the electric trains that serve millions of passengers daily. The depot itself has a rich history. This integration now covers the Yokosuka Line and the South Ward Line.

Step inside the substation. You’ll see a complex network of tracks. These tracks snake through the facility. There are sidings for cleaning washing and maintenance. Different areas are carefully designated for different purposes. They have designated areas for specific train types. There are even spaces for storing older trains. Trains are carefully stored while awaiting repairs or modifications.

The depot plays a critical role in the maintenance of various electric multiple unit trains. Trains such as the E233 series 8000 and 8500 are regularly seen here. These trains run on the South Ward Line. The E131 series 1000 series also run on the Yokosuka Line. And the E127 series serve the South Ward branch line.

The substation’s location is strategically chosen. It’s right next to the Musashi-Nakahara Station. This location provides easy access to the lines it services. Its sharp curves are famous amongst rail enthusiasts. It features the largest curve on the entire South Ward Line.
