Gazing up at this impressive structure, can you believe a sewage pump station lies within? This is the Zenigamecho Building, a modern marvel in Tokyo. It seamlessly blends vital infrastructure with sleek design, standing as a testament to urban innovation. The Zenigamecho Building, completed in March 2022, serves a critical function. It houses the Zenigamecho Pumping Station. This station pumps wastewater from areas like Otemachi and Yaesu to the Water Reclamation Center. This crucial task helps keep Tokyo clean and functioning. The previous pump station on this site had served diligently for over 50 years. However, aging infrastructure necessitated a rebuild. The challenge? Finding space in this densely packed area, already home to commercial buildings, underground parking, and a substation. The solution was ingenious. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government collaborated on the TOKYO TORCH project, a large-scale redevelopment initiative. The Zenigamecho Building became part of this project. This allowed for the construction of a new pumping station without disrupting vital services. The building’s design is unique. It features a rounded corner reminiscent of stacked tiles, a nod to the area’s history of sewage facilities. This design also helps reduce the oppressive feeling often associated with such infrastructure. The lower levels echo the tile aesthetic. They pay homage to the design of sewage facilities from the Meiji and Taisho periods. A showroom provides information about sewage operations. It offers visitors a glimpse into the hidden workings of the city. On the second floor and rooftop, a “Green Network” connects to the adjacent Kajibashi Park. Planted terraces soften the building’s presence. They create a welcoming green space visible from the surrounding streets. The roof’s sloped surface, covered in polished aluminum panels, enhances the green appearance. It reflects the sky and the surrounding greenery. Inside, the Zenigamecho Building houses more than just a pumping station. The Tokyo Metropolitan Sewerage Bureau’s central sewage office occupies floors four through eight. The first floor hosts the Senigame Place, a multipurpose space. It features shops and a cafe operated by students from a nationwide program called Another Japan. This program provides students with hands-on experience in retail and business management. They sell regional products, offering visitors a taste of Japan’s diverse culinary landscape. The Zenigamecho Building exemplifies Tokyo’s ability to transform the mundane into something extraordinary. It showcases a harmonious balance of functionality and aesthetics. It also highlights the city’s commitment to sustainable practices and community engagement.
