The original church wasn’t here. It stood on a small hill. A large cross reaching toward the sky. This wasn’t always the case. In 1972 the church moved to its current location. This was due to redevelopment plans near the station. It’s now a stunning white four-story structure. It backs against a lush green hill. It’s an eight-minute walk from Matsudo Station. A convenient location for those commuting from all over.
The parishioners themselves are a diverse group. They hail from Matsudo City and beyond. They span three prefectures ten cities and several counties. They number over 1600. A vibrant and growing community. Even Filipinos and Spanish-speaking people from Peru are part of this fellowship. This speaks to its inclusivity and global reach.
The Konkokyo Matsudo Kyokai is far more than a place of worship. It’s a hub of community activity. St Michael Kindergarten is located on the church grounds. 120 children fill it with lively energy. The Carmelite Sisters of Charity live nearby. They actively participate in the church’s mission. The church even offers Japanese language classes and seminars for infant baptisms to its international members.
The community is organized into eight regional groups. They promote communication and support. The church committee evolved into a pastoral council. They represent the regional groups. They work together to plan activities. The motto is to think discuss and decide together. There are women’s groups and men’s groups. The men’s group St Joseph’s group is comprised of men from diverse professional backgrounds. This diversity adds richness and strength to their community.
