Who lies beneath this mound remains a mystery. Here stands the Noge Otsuka Kofun. It is a significant historical site in Tokyo’s Setagaya district.

Noge Otsuka Kofun is not just any burial mound. It is Tokyo’s designated historical site. This ancient structure offers a peek into Japan’s Kofun period. That era lasted from the 3rd to the 7th centuries.

Let’s delve into its details. The Noge Otsuka Kofun is a keyhole-shaped tomb. This is called a zenpo-koenfun in Japanese. It stretches 82 meters long. Its round section has a diameter of 67 meters. The mound reaches a height of 11 meters. This makes it one of the largest of its kind in Japan.

Around the main structure is a moat. It is shaped like a horse’s hoof. Including this moat, the total length extends to 104 meters. The surface was once covered with fukiishi. These are stones carefully placed to protect the mound.

Excavations have revealed much about the Noge Otsuka Kofun. Four burial facilities were found at the top of the round part. The first main chamber contained remarkable artifacts. Among them were iron armor and stone tools. These finds are some of the oldest iron armor discovered in the Kanto region.

Also discovered were various grave goods. These included short armor pieces and helmets. Iron swords and straight blades were unearthed. Over 25 iron arrowheads were also found. There were iron knives and sickles. A bronze mirror with floral designs was recovered. Other items included jasper and stone reproductions.

These artifacts suggest the tomb dates back to the early 5th century. It is about 1600 years ago. The Noge Otsuka Kofun likely belonged to a powerful leader. They had close ties to the Kinai region. This leader probably governed the southern Musashi area.

The Noge Otsuka Kofun is important. It helps us understand the politics and society of its time. The items found offer clues. They reveal the connections between regions and rulers.

Today, the Noge Otsuka Kofun is located in the Tamagawa Noge-machi Park. It provides a green space. It is a place to reflect on history. As a designated historical site, it is preserved. It is there for future generations to appreciate.

So as you stand here take a moment. Consider the people who built this tomb. Imagine the rituals performed here. Think about the leader who rested here. The Noge Otsuka Kofun remains. It is a testament to Japan’s rich and complex past.
