In the quiet district of Toshima, a temple stands waiting. This is Chorinji Temple. Not the Joren-ji Temple in Itabashi ward. Chorinji Temple is a serene escape from Tokyo’s vibrant pulse.

Formally known as Myoosan Fudoin Chorinji Temple it belongs to the Koyasan Shingon sect of Buddhism. Its precise founding date remains a mystery. But history suggests it emerged in the early Edo period.

Though not expansive it is well-maintained. You will find a main hall and meticulously kept grounds here. The Main Hall was erected in 1929. It enshrines Fudo Myo-o as its principal image. To the left stands Daishido Hall.

The temple’s history saw a significant change in 1905. It shifted its allegiance from Aizen Shinfukuji Temple. It then became affiliated with Gokoku-ji Temple.

Chorinji Temple is located a short walk west of Kita-Ikebukuro Station on the Tobu Tojo Line. You can reach this tranquil space in about eleven minutes. The graveyard gate features Western-style pillars.

Chorinji Temple underwent a revival under the sixth head priest. The main hall and gate were constructed at that time. The temple is site number 13 on the Toshima Eighty-eight Sacred Sites pilgrimage. This highlights its local spiritual importance.

Step inside and discover a peaceful haven. It is a testament to Tokyo’s rich Buddhist heritage. Chorinji Temple is a place of reflection and quiet contemplation.
