“What’s the story behind this school” I hear you ask as you look at Adachi Ward Iko Elementary School. Let me tell you its interesting history. Adachi Ward Iko Elementary School first opened its doors on January 22 1874. Back then it was known as the 9th Branch School of the 4th Elementary School in the 5th Middle School District.

In 1876 the school moved to its current location. This marked a new chapter for Adachi Ward Iko Elementary School. The school added a higher elementary school section in September 1895. It was then renamed Iko Ordinary Elementary School. A fire in March 1907 destroyed the school building. Classes were temporarily held at Fukuju Temple. A new school building was completed in January 1908. Students and teachers moved into it.

A youth training center was established in July 1926. In October 1932 the school’s name changed again. It became Tokyo City Iko Ordinary Higher Elementary School. This change came about due to the merger of Minami Adachi County. The school was renamed Tokyo City Iko National School in April 1941. After that in April 1947 it adopted its current name. It is now known as Adachi Ward Iko Elementary School.

The school established its song in November 1949. The school flag was created in September 1961. Adachi Ward Higashi Iko Elementary School became independent in April 1971. It initially shared space with Iko Elementary School. By July 1971 Higashi Iko Elementary School moved to its own location. Adachi Ward Nishi Iko Elementary School became independent in April 1972.

Adachi Ward Iko Elementary School has a clear educational goal. It strives to develop children who are thoughtful. It also aims to nurture children who think critically. It encourages kids to persevere and be energetic. As of April 8 2024 the school has 599 students across 19 classes. The school is located at 4-16-1 Iko Adachi-ku Tokyo.
