From a bustling transportation hub emerged Akasaka Pond. This seemingly ordinary landmark holds a captivating history. Akasaka Pond, nestled near the Shibuya and Minato wards, stands as a testament to Tokyo’s ever-evolving landscape.

Akasaka Pond wasn’t always a tranquil oasis. In 1606, during the Edo period, the shogun commissioned its construction. Akasaka Pond served as both a crucial water source and a defensive moat for Edo Castle. The pond’s strategic location and pristine water quality made it a prized asset. Akasaka Pond even provided water for the southern part of the town. Its clear waters reflected the surrounding landscape, attracting visitors and residents alike. Akasaka Pond earned its reputation as the “cradle of waterways.”

Over time, Akasaka Pond became a place of leisure and recreation. People would boat across its surface, enjoying the scenic views. Its banks were adorned with tea houses, offering respite to weary travelers. The area around Akasaka Pond thrived, transforming into a lively entertainment district. This bustling atmosphere led to the establishment of Akasaka Pond Town.

Sadly, Akasaka Pond’s fortunes changed during the Meiji era. As the city modernized, the pond’s banks were stripped of their stones. The once abundant waters dwindled, leaving behind a mere trickle. By 1899, Akasaka Pond had vanished entirely. Today, only a commemorative stone, “Monument to the Development of Akasaka Pond,” marks its existence near the Shibuya and Minato wards. The inscription recounts the pond’s rich history, from its role as a vital water source to its transformation into a beloved recreational spot. Although Akasaka Pond is gone, its legacy lives on in the bustling streets and vibrant culture of Minato.
