“Can we make a curry?” That question sparked a unique collaboration. It involved students from Toyotama Elementary School and a renowned food company.

Toyotama Elementary School is located in Tokyo. It is a place where creativity blossoms. In 2024, the school’s sixth-graders embarked on a special project. They partnered with Nishikiya Kitchen a company known for its ready-to-eat meals.

The goal was to create original retort curries. The students brainstormed ideas for flavors packaging and even pricing. The project named “School Curry Project” aimed to foster children’s food education.

The company’s staff acted as teachers. They guided the students through the whole product development. It went from planning to deciding on flavors. They also worked on package design.

One curry born from this project was “Butter Apple Curry”. The sixth-grade class one created it. They took inspiration from Indian butter chicken curry. They used pork and three kinds of apples. It was designed to be mild for even first-graders to enjoy.

Another class created “Oyakodon Curry”. It was inspired by the classic Japanese chicken and egg bowl. This curry featured chicken egg and burdock root. The base was a broth made from bonito and kelp.

These unique curries went on sale in February 2025. They were available in limited quantities. Toyotama Elementary School students actively participated. They learned about creating a product and teamwork.

Nishikiya Kitchen has a history. It started as Nishikiya in 2011. It rebranded in 2021 to focus on providing convenient meals. They want to help busy people enjoy tasty food easily.

The collaboration with Toyotama Elementary School exemplifies this vision. The students gained real-world experience. They developed their creativity and learned about food. Toyotama Elementary School provided a platform. It allowed students to express themselves. Their ideas turned into products. The School Curry Project became a sweet memory for everyone involved.
