Contemplate this temple. It stands as a serene testament to Nichiren Buddhism. This is Kakushō-ji. Nestled in Tokyo’s Suginami district, Kakushō-ji Temple offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle.

Kakushō-ji’s story is quite interesting. Its mountain name is Seigetsuzan. The temple’s origins trace back centuries. While the exact founding year is unknown, Kakushō-ji’s revival occurred between 1596 and 1614. This revival was thanks to Jitsujōin Nissyō.

Originally a Shingon temple, Kakushō-ji changed its religious affiliation. Jitsujōin Nissyō converted it to Nichiren Buddhism. This conversion marked a significant turning point in the temple’s history.

Let’s talk about what makes Kakushō-ji special. It enshrines Kishimojin. Kishimojin is a goddess. Legend says that she once devoured children. However, she converted to Buddhism. Now she protects children and ensures easy delivery.

Notably, the Kishimojin statue is linked to Nichiren. The statue was supposedly carved by Nichiren himself. It was given to believers as a token of gratitude after receiving rice cakes.

Kakushō-ji’s structures reflect its history. The main hall was rebuilt in 1956. There is also a Sanmon gate. A five-hundredth memorial pagoda for Nichiren stands. It was erected around 1781. A copper statue commemorating the seven-hundredth memorial was added in 1981. Nissyō Shonin Pagoda was built in 1966.

Approaching Kakushō-ji, one can appreciate its accessibility. It is a short walk from Sakura-jōsui Station. This makes it easily reachable.

Once here, note the cemetery. The cemetery is mostly flat. This provides easy access for visitors.

Kakushō-ji also has a meeting hall. This hall can accommodate various events. It can host funerals and memorial services. The hall can accommodate up to 144 people.

The temple also offers a permanent memorial tower. This provides a place for those without grave successors to be permanently memorialized. Moreover, Kakushō-ji does not require donations. This alleviates financial concerns for visitors.

Kakushō-ji offers a serene experience. It is a place where history meets spirituality. A visit here provides a unique glimpse into Tokyo’s religious heritage. The temple’s setting and accessibility make it a special destination.
