“Ever dream of crossing a bridge that links not just land but eras?” Today we are standing before Nishiarai Bridge. Nishiarai Bridge is not merely a way to get from point A to point B. It’s a testament to Tokyo’s resilience and evolution.

Let’s delve into the story of Nishiarai Bridge. This bridge spans the Arakawa River. It connects Adachi Ward’s Nishiarai area with the Senju district. It is a vital artery linking Saitama Prefecture’s east with central Tokyo.

The Arakawa River flows about 17 kilometers from the river mouth. The Nishiarai Bridge stands as a crucial part of Tokyo’s infrastructure. The bridge is officially Tokyo Metropolitan Route 461. This route is also known as Ome Kaido Isehara Line.

Imagine Tokyo in 1922. The Arakawa River was undergoing major excavation. A wooden bridge emerged. It had reinforced concrete piers. This original Nishiarai Bridge was born in March 1922. It stretched 439 meters long and 5.5 meters wide. Its name came from Nishiarai Daishi Temple a nearby landmark.

But time took its toll. By the mid-20th century, Nishiarai Bridge needed replacing. Increased traffic and age demanded a new structure.

In 1960, the modern Nishiarai Bridge was completed. Construction began in October 1956. This new bridge cost 748 million yen. The Tokyo Metropolitan Construction Bureau led the project. The new bridge was built about 80 meters downstream from the old one.

The bridge has a length of 444.6 meters. Its width is 15 meters. The main spans are continuous steel plate girders. The side spans use simple composite girders. The foundations reach deep. They go 35 meters for main spans and 30 meters for side spans. This ensures stability in the soft ground. Lightweight steel was used for the main span floor to reduce weight.

Nishiarai Bridge partially opened in March 1961. Full access was delayed due to land acquisition issues. The left bank approach road wasn’t completed until later.

The Nishiarai Bridge is not just for cars. Pedestrian walkways are available on both sides of the bridge. Each walkway is 2 meters wide.

The bridge has been designated as an emergency transport route. It is a vital link for disaster relief.

Did you know the old Nishiarai Bridge offered views of the Senju Thermal Power Plant chimneys? These chimneys were famous as “Obake Entotsu” or ghost chimneys. The old bridge was a popular spot for photographers.

Today the Nishiarai Bridge stands strong. It is more than steel and concrete. It represents Tokyo’s continuous growth. As we cross, remember the bridge’s past and its role in Tokyo’s future.
