Gliding silently through the park a miniature train appeared. This is Gyoutoku Stationmae Park. A small park it’s surprisingly significant. It sits in Ichikawa City Chiba Prefecture. More specifically it’s in the southern part of the city. It’s located in the Gyoutoku district.
Gyoutoku Stationmae Park wasn’t always this way. It was established as part of a larger land development project. This happened around 1973 or perhaps 1974 sources differ slightly. Initially the park was just a simple layout. Much of the land was undeveloped.
The park’s iconic miniature train the mini SL was a later addition. The idea came from the Ichikawa Gas Railway Club in 1976. The club suggested the mini SL. Ichikawa City built the tracks and entrusted operations to the club. They still operate it today.
The mini SL is a charming sight. It puffs out little clouds of smoke as it chugs around. Regular operation schedules exist. You can even take a ride. It’s free of charge. This is possible on the second Sunday of each month excluding August.
Besides the mini SL Gyoutoku Stationmae Park offers more. There’s a playground for children. This includes swings slides and a jungle gym. There is also a large spray fountain. This is particularly delightful on hot summer days. The fountain creates a wonderful cooling effect. It’s a popular spot for families.
A small but well-maintained park Gyoutoku Stationmae Park provides a respite. It’s a place to relax and enjoy. It offers various attractions for all ages. From the charming mini SL to the refreshing spray fountain it’s worth a visit. You will find it a truly hidden gem of Ichikawa. It’s only a short walk from Gyoutoku Station.
