“Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation? That sounds more like a factory than a historical building!” Right here in front of you stands the Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation. It might surprise you but this building has a rich history. The Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation is a company with a fascinating past. It has been a cornerstone of Taiwan’s economy for over a century. The building itself served as the headquarters for the Taiwan Monopoly Bureau throughout Japanese rule. The bureau’s history can be traced back to 1901 during the Qing Dynasty when it was first established as the Monopoly Bureau of the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office. Following World War II it became the Taiwan Provincial Monopoly Bureau and finally the Taiwan Provincial Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau in 1947. After a century of operating as a government agency, the bureau was corporatized in 2002 and became the Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation we see today. The company still holds a significant place in Taiwan’s market. It produces a wide range of popular products. These include everything from traditional Taiwanese cigarettes and liquors to more modern offerings like craft beers and fruit wines.
