Across the street from the Shenzhen Library, a remarkable artwork captures the essence of daily life. This is the “Shenzhen People’s One Day” sculpture group. It’s a powerful reminder of the city’s transformation since 1999, when the project officially began. The “Shenzhen People’s One Day” offers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary citizens who helped shape this dynamic city.

The “Shenzhen People’s One Day” is more than just a collection of statues. It’s a time capsule, preserving the memories of Shenzhen residents at the turn of the 21st century. The sculptures depict 17 individuals from diverse backgrounds and professions. These weren’t idealized figures, but real people chosen for their everyday roles. They represent the city’s vibrant tapestry of life. A stockbroker, a designer, a job seeker, a waitress, a civil servant – each figure tells a story of ambition, struggle, and resilience.

The sculpture project was a collaborative effort. Journalists from the Shenzhen Evening News, along with sculptors and designers from the Shenzhen Sculpture Academy, worked together to find the models. The team scoured the city streets, randomly selecting individuals and gaining their consent to be immortalized in bronze. Each figure is accompanied by a plaque displaying their name, age, occupation, and a brief personal history. Alongside the figures, four black granite walls further contextualize “Shenzhen People’s One Day”. These walls are etched with data reflecting various aspects of city life on that specific day: stock market trends, agricultural prices, weather forecasts, even the front page of the Shenzhen Evening News.

The Shenzhen Evening News played a significant role in bringing the “Shenzhen People’s One Day” to life. The newspaper’s journalists participated in the search for models, documenting the process and capturing the spirit of the project. Their involvement underscores the sculpture’s connection to the city’s collective memory. The newspaper’s front page from November 29, 1999, the day the project launched, is even engraved on one of the granite walls. One of the models, Ms. Lai Xin, attended the exhibition opening with her father and children, three generations witnessing her contribution to Shenzhen’s history. For her, being part of this iconic artwork wasn’t just an honor, it was a deeply personal experience, a testament to the dreams and aspirations of ordinary Shenzhen residents.

The “Shenzhen People’s One Day” stands as a powerful symbol of the city’s rapid development and the contributions of its people. It’s a reminder that the story of Shenzhen is ultimately the story of its people, their everyday lives, and their dreams for the future. It encourages reflection on the transformative power of individual lives within a rapidly changing urban landscape. It serves as a tribute to the human spirit and its capacity for resilience, innovation, and hope.
