Have you ever felt the serenity of a hidden temple? This is Togakuin Temple. Nestled not far from Tokyo it is also known as the Azalea Temple. Its history is shrouded in mystery. Few records detail its origins. Legend however speaks of Yamatotakeru a mythological hero. He is said to have discovered a spring here while thirsty. In gratitude he planted a tree. This is how the area became known as Shiboku the “tree of the gods”.

Togakuin Temple now stands as a testament to time. It’s a temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. The temple’s current main hall is a relatively recent addition. It was rebuilt around 1854. While the main deity Fudo Myoo is a hidden statue we cannot see. A new impressive statue was created in 2007. This 3.6 meter tall statue commemorates the 1200th anniversary of the Tendai sect. Fudo Myoo is known as an angry Buddha. He punishes those who do wrong.

But Togakuin Temple isn’t just about solemn religious history. It’s also famed for its stunning azaleas. From mid-April to early May nearly 2000 azaleas burst into bloom.
