Welcome to Tateishi Suwa Shrine. It is a spiritual anchor for the Tateishi area of Tokyo’s Katsushika Ward. Though its exact founding date is unknown, records suggest its existence since the mid-Edo period.
Let’s delve into the history of Tateishi Suwa Shrine. While the shrine’s origins are not precisely documented, its presence is confirmed through historical records dating back to 1799. Tateishi Suwa Shrine enshrines two primary deities. These are Takeminakata-no-Kami and Yasakatome-no-Kami. Takeminakata-no-Kami is revered as a god of strength. He is also a martial deity, a wind god, an agricultural deity, and a hunting god. Yasakatome-no-Kami is considered the wife of Takeminakata-no-Kami.
Interestingly, Takeminakata-no-Kami is associated with the legend of conjuring divine winds during the Yuan Dynasty. The shrine is linked to Suwa Grand Shrine in Nagano Prefecture. This grand shrine is the head shrine of over ten thousand Suwa shrines across the country. People affectionately call it “O-Suwa-sama”. It enjoys widespread devotion.
