From humble beginnings to a beacon of business education, Rikkyo University’s College of Business stands before you. Established in 1922 as the College of Commerce, this institution has evolved alongside Japan’s economic landscape. Imagine Tokyo in the post-war era. A nation rebuilding, industries rising, and a need for skilled business professionals. Rikkyo University answered that call. Initially part of the College of Economics, the Department of Management emerged in 1949. This reflected the close ties between business management and economic policy in post-war Japan’s planned economy. Later, the Department of Industrial Relations was established in 1969 within the College of Social Relations. This recognized the growing importance of human relations and labor management in Japan’s evolving economy. For decades, these two departments provided distinct yet parallel approaches to business education. As Japan embraced globalization, the demand for adaptable and ethical leaders surged. Rikkyo University initiated a project to unify its management education. In 2006, the College of Business was born. It merged the Department of Management and Department of Industrial Relations, bringing together faculty and students under a shared vision. Today, Rikkyo University’s College of Business carries the legacy of over 150 years of management education. It offers undergraduate programs in Business and Global Business, leading to a Bachelor in Business degree. Additionally, it offers postgraduate programs including a Master’s in International Business and a Master’s in Leadership Development. In 2024, the College of Business, along with the Graduate School of Business, achieved a significant milestone. It earned accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). This prestigious recognition places Rikkyo University among the top 6% of business schools worldwide. This achievement stands as a testament to Rikkyo University’s commitment to nurturing future generations of business leaders. As you stand here, consider the countless students who have walked these halls. They’ve learned, debated, and grown within these walls, carrying the Rikkyo spirit into the world of business.
