What secrets does Minoridai hold? This unassuming neighborhood in Matsudo, Tokyo, holds a captivating history. Minoridai’s story is deeply intertwined with Japan’s post-war transformation. Minoridai wasn’t always known by this name. The area we stand in encompasses Minoridai 1-chome to 8-chome and the undifferentiated Minoridai area. The postal code is 270-2231. It began as part of a vast military training ground, the Hachigata Exercise Field, used by the Imperial Japanese Army. Imagine the scene: vast fields stretching out, soldiers marching, the sounds of drills echoing in the air. After the war, in 1945, as part of Japan’s demilitarization efforts, this land was opened up to returning soldiers and settlers. Sixty-two former soldiers started cultivating this land. They formed a group called the “Hachigata Farming Association”, facing the daunting task of transforming the former military grounds into farmland. The land, once used for military exercises, was now filled with the hope of a new beginning. These settlers had primarily served in units like the 12th Area Army, 2nd Mortar Company Command, or the 26th Regiment of Field Heavy Artillery. They were not experienced farmers. The land was difficult to cultivate. Initially, they could only successfully grow sweet potatoes, barely enough to sustain them. The settlers prayed for abundant harvests, for food to fill their tables. In 1946, inspired by this hope, they renamed the area Minoridai, meaning “Field of Bountiful Harvests”. The Hachigata Farming Association became the Minoridai Farming Association. Minoridai’s development accelerated with the opening of the Shin-Keisei Line. Minoridai Station, although technically located in neighboring Matsudo-Shinmachi, became a crucial link. It connected Minoridai to the rest of Tokyo and beyond. This opened up opportunities for trade, commerce, and connection to the broader world. The seeds of a thriving community were sown. Minoridai is also home to the Minoridai Industrial Park, a testament to Japan’s economic resurgence after the war. This industrial area is located primarily around Minoridai 5-chome and 6-chome. It attracted various industries. It further fueled Minoridai’s growth as a residential and economic hub. The once barren military grounds had transformed into a vibrant center of activity. Today, Minoridai boasts a lively shopping street near the station. It is home to the Minoridai Community Center and several local businesses. The spirit of the settlers who transformed this land lives on. Minoridai remains a testament to their resilience. Their hope for a bountiful future continues to shape this community.
