“Temple of the Benevolent Light” is its endearing name. Zenkō-ji in Tokyo stands as a testament to Buddhist tradition. It welcomes all regardless of sect.
Zenkō-ji’s history stretches back to 642 AD. Yoshimitsu Honda enshrined a Buddhist image here. This image came from India. It arrived in Japan via the Korean Peninsula. This was in 552. It is called “The Image of Sangoku Denrai”.
The image leads all people to the Buddhist Pure Land. Status, gender or creed do not matter. Many people have worshipped it from rulers to commoners.
The main image was hidden in 654. No one has seen it since. “Zenkoji” means “Yoshimitsu’s temple”. The name uses another reading of Chinese characters.
The temple does not affiliate with any Buddhist sect. It accepts all without distinction. Zenkō-ji enshrines one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist statues. This is the statue of Ikko Sanzon Amida Nyorai. It is the Buddha of immeasurable light and life.
The statue of Ikko Sanzon Amida Nyorai is also known as Zenkoji Nyorai. It first came to Japan from the Korean Peninsula in 552. It remains a symbol of openness and acceptance.
The Ikko Sanzon Amida Nyorai is the central object of veneration. The statue has remained hidden since 654. During the Kamakura period a second statue was sculpted. It embodies the Ikko Sanzon Amida Nyorai. This statue is the “Maedachi Honzon”. It is publicly displayed in the main hall every seventh year. This happens during the “Gokaicho” ceremony.
Visitors can experience Zenkō-ji’s history and culture. The statue of Amida Nyorai was brought from Baekje in 552. It was enshrined at the temple in 642.
Consider the Sanmon gates built in 1750. They offer sweeping views of the temple grounds and main hall.
As you approach the main hall you find the Binzuru sonja statue. It is also called “Nade-botoke”. Pat its head to ease weariness. Receive its healing powers. So many visitors have rubbed its head since 1713. Its face is worn down.
At the main hall’s far end is the entrance for the tour. A dark corridor leads to the basement. Legend says if you touch the “key of enlightenment” you connect with the hidden Zenkoji Nyorai. Good fortune comes to those who do.
