“Ever heard of a shrine that’s been watching over a village since 1796?” That’s the story of Fukumori Inari Shrine. It stands here in Katsushika. This shrine is more than just a building. It’s a guardian of the old Fukumori village.
Fukumori Inari Shrine was founded in the 8th year of the Kansei era. That is September 1796. Villagers built it to watch over them. The main deity is Ukonomitama no Mikoto. This deity represents food and abundant harvests.
Let’s talk about the shrine’s history. According to the “Katsushika-ku Shrine Survey Report”, an old document mentions Inari Shrine. This document describes its location inside the Nakagawa embankment. It was called Fukumori Inari. The shrine was under the care of Hokoin Temple.
A stone monument tells more about Fukumori Inari Shrine. It says that in 1796, the shrine was dedicated to Inari Daimyojin. The monument also mentions two supporting shrines. These shrines were the old Aoto village and Kannon Temple.
Over time Fukumori Inari Shrine needed repair. In 1933, locals like Iwaji Matsumoto and others helped renovate it. The main shrine building was rebuilt in January 1937. A formal ceremony marked the occasion.
The shrine is located at Aoto 1-11-6 in Katsushika. It is a short walk from Aoto Station.
