Hidden amongst the bustling streets of Nihonbashi lies Fukutoku Jinja Shrine. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s a place steeped in history and legend. It’s said that enshrinement at Fukutoku Jinja Shrine began sometime between 859 and 876 AD. Imagine a vastly different Tokyo then. A rural landscape surrounded the shrine. Farmers lived nearby. The shrine worshipped Inari the deity of foxes and fortune. It served the Fukutoku village.

Fukutoku Jinja Shrine wasn’t always a hidden gem. The original main building was magnificent. Its grounds covered a large area. Forests and fields once surrounded it. This shrine held a special place in the hearts of military commanders. In 1590 Tokugawa Ieyasu visited the shrine. He was on his way to Edo. He became the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. He visited the shrine many times after that. This visit cemented the shrine’s importance.

The shrine’s main deity is Uka-no-Mitama-no-Mikoto. This deity presides over grain. Other deities were enshrined around the Edo period. Ota Dokan a military commander who built Edo Castle is one. Benzaiten a Hindu deity transferred from Edo Castle is another. Tokugawa Ieyasu himself is also enshrined. He is the supreme authority over Tosho-gu Shrine. He established the Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo. He is a significant figure in Japanese history.

The shrine’s history is full of interesting details. One story involves Sugawara Michizane a scholar and poet. Some accounts suggest Sugawara Michizane was somehow connected to the shrine. This is not definitively proven. This adds to the mystery. Another interesting tidbit is the shrine’s original name. It was known as Mebuki Inari. This reflects its connection to the Inari deity. The shrine even underwent a major renovation in 1994.

Today Fukutoku Jinja Shrine stands as a testament to its rich past. It’s a reminder of the evolution of Tokyo from a rural area to a modern metropolis. It’s a quiet sanctuary in a busy city. It’s a place to connect with history and reflect on the passage of time. This small shrine holds stories of gods and shoguns. It reflects the layers of history that shaped this incredible city. Fukutoku Jinja Shrine stands as a silent guardian of the past. It is a place of peace.
