“Where am I?” a confused traveler might ask. This is the Kanda Bridge. It spans the Nihonbashi River in Tokyo’s Chiyoda district.

Kanda Bridge is more than just a way to cross water. It connects neighborhoods. To the right is Otemachi. To the left is Kanda. High-rise buildings give way to smaller shops. Small businesses thrive here.

The bridge’s name comes from Kanda Myojin Shrine. The shrine once stood nearby. It moved during the Edo period. This was due to the expansion of Edo Castle. The old shrine site became home to important officials.

Interestingly Kanda Bridge was once called “Omanma Bashi.” This name appears on maps from the Kan-ei era. This translates to “Big Pot Rice Bridge”.

Listen closely. You might hear echoes of history. During the Edo period powerful Tokugawa shoguns passed over Kanda Bridge. They were on their way to Kaneiji Temple. This journey became known as “Oseido.” Even today the Imperial family uses this route. They travel to northern Kanto. This keeps the “Oseido” tradition alive.

Earthquakes have shaped Kanda Bridge. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 destroyed it. In 1925 a new bridge was built. It used reinforced concrete. The current Kanda Bridge dates back to 1980. It features a simple steel girder design. Stone lanterns add a touch of elegance. These details evoke the past.

Look to the side of Kanda Bridge. You will see a park. It has a basketball court. However it is temporarily closed. This is due to construction on Tokiwa Bridge.

Beneath Kanda Bridge lies a network of transportation. The Tokyo Metro and Toei subway lines run below. Above us the Shuto Expressway passes overhead. Kanda Bridge is a vital part of Tokyo’s infrastructure.

Kanda Bridge has seen many changes. From “Omanma Bashi” to its current form. It remains a link between Tokyo’s past and present. Take a moment to appreciate its story. It is a story etched in stone and steel.
