Could a giant Buddha bring peace to Tokyo? At Jorenji Temple in Itabashi City, the Tokyo Daibutsu stands as a testament to this hope. This isn’t just any Buddha statue. It’s the third largest bronze Buddha in Japan, a beacon of serenity amidst the urban sprawl. Jorenji Temple itself has a rich history, dating back to around 1400. Originally located in Itabashi-shuku, a post station on the Nakasendo road connecting Tokyo and Kyoto, it was later relocated to the site of Akatsuka Castle’s outer citadel. The Tokyo Daibutsu at Jorenji Temple was erected in 1977. It was a symbol of hope against war and earthquakes. This massive statue is about 12.5 meters tall and weighs 32 tons. Its head is slightly tilted forward. This allows visitors to meet its gaze during prayer. Standing beneath it, you might feel a sense of awe, a connection to the Buddha’s peaceful state. Jorenji Temple was a favored spot of the Tokugawa shoguns. They designated it as a *shuinchi*, exempting it from taxes and labor. The temple even became a rest stop for shogun families after Yoshimune Tokugawa sought shelter there during a falconry hunt. Look around, and you’ll see the Tokugawa family crest, the triple hollyhock, adorning various parts of the temple. Before entering the main temple, you’ll encounter Enmado, the chamber of Enma, the god of hell. Inside, statues of Enma, Datsue-ba (the old woman who strips clothes off the dead), and the Jyuou (ten judges of hell) reside, surrounded by countless colorful origami cranes. As you ascend the stone steps and pass through the gate guarded by fierce statues, the Tokyo Daibutsu at Jorenji Temple comes into full view. The temple grounds also house the Seven Deities of Good Luck and unique stone statues. These statues are said to have been brought from the Korean peninsula by samurai Takatora Todo. You’ll also find small *onegai jizo* statues, wish-granting figures that add a touch of warmth to the atmosphere. While Jorenji Temple bustles during holidays and peak seasons, it usually offers a tranquil escape. The air is filled with incense smoke. Pails adorned with the triple hollyhock are neatly arranged. Here, at the Tokyo Daibutsu, you can find a moment of peace in the heart of Tokyo.
