Shirahige Jinja’s origins remain shrouded in mystery. Some say its roots trace back to 860 AD. Others believe it emerged during the Jisho era (1177-1181). One thing is certain. This shrine has borne witness to the ebb and flow of Tokyo’s history. During the Edo period, Shirahige Jinja was known as Maroudo Gongen. It served as the guardian shrine of Shibue Village. Legend has it that the sixth shogun of the Edo bakufu, Ietsuna Tokugawa, received blessings from this sacred site. It’s said that these blessings resulted in the birth of an heir. This tale catapulted the shrine to fame, making it immensely popular among women seeking similar good fortune. In 1869, the shrine received its present name, Shirahige Jinja, a fusion of “Shirahige,” “Hakusan,” and “Maroudo Gongen.” The current shrine building isn’t as ancient as the stories it holds. Originally constructed in 1848, it underwent a transformation in 1993, shifting from a tile roof to a more durable copper one. Shirahige Jinja offers more than just historical intrigue. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith. Inside, you can receive blessings, purchase amulets, and offer prayers to Sarutahiko Okami, the deity enshrined within. He’s a prominent figure in Japanese mythology, revered as a guide and protector.
