Tucked away in the serene landscapes of Wakayama Prefecture, Taki Jinja Shrine whispers tales of ancient reverence. This Shinto shrine, also known as Hiro-jinja Shrine, holds a unique distinction. It lacks a traditional worship hall. Instead, the cascading waters of Nachi Waterfall, Japan’s tallest single-drop waterfall, serve as the shrine’s shintai. This is the sacred object where the deity resides. Imagine standing before the awe-inspiring Nachi Waterfall, its waters plunging 133 meters into the basin below. The roar and spray create a powerful, spiritual atmosphere. This is the heart of Taki Jinja Shrine.

Taki Jinja Shrine, a branch of the Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine, is dedicated to Hiro Gongen. This deity is associated with Onamuchi-no-Mikoto, the kami of connections and marital harmony. Every year on July 14, the deities of Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine are carried to Taki Jinja for a “homecoming” ceremony. This is a vital part of the grand shrine’s Fire Festival. Nachi Waterfall, known as the “First Waterfall” or Ichi-no-Taki, holds immense significance in the Kumano faith. It is one of 48 waterfalls in the region, yet it stands apart. In ancient times, yamabushi, mountain ascetics, used the waterfall for ritual austerities. This tradition continued into the Heian period (794–1185), attracting nobles and even former emperors. Legend has it that the first emperor of Japan, Jimmu, discovered Nachi Waterfall. He was drawn to a “glimmering in the mountains” and followed it inland to the magnificent cascade. This discovery marked the beginning of his journey to establish Japan’s first capital in present-day Nara.

A captivating tale surrounds former emperor Kazan (968–1008). After abdicating the throne, Kazan visited Kumano in 991. He is said to have performed a thousand days of austerity under Nachi Waterfall. He even placed a nine-holed abalone shell in the basin, imbuing the water with mystical properties. Even today, visitors are encouraged to drink from the basin, believing it can increase longevity. A short climb up from the main grounds of Taki Jinja Shrine leads you to the Otaki Haisho, the Place of Prayer at the Waterfall. From this elevated vantage point, you can take in the breathtaking view of the falls. Taki Jinja Shrine is a testament to the enduring power of nature and its ability to inspire reverence and devotion. Its unique form of worship, centered around the majestic Nachi Waterfall, offers a powerful spiritual experience. It leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
