“Is this a temple or a well-hidden park?”

Welcome to the Mankoji Temple. This serene space offers a journey back through time. It is a refuge from Tokyo’s busy streets.

Mankoji Temple belongs to the Jodo sect. It is said to have been established between the Nanboku-cho and Muromachi periods. The temple was once near Ueno Shinobazu Pond. It was relocated to its current location during Kaneiji Temple’s construction.

Inside Mankoji Temple you can see stone monuments. These include a stone tablet dating back to 1378. You will also find a Jizo tower. Plus there are statues of Niyo Daishi and Niyo Binzuru.

The bright red Sanno gate stands out. The main hall has a modern design. It creates a special atmosphere.

Mankoji Temple is also known as Niyo Village in Ueno. This is after Niyo Izumi.

You can visit Mankoji Temple freely from 9 am to 5 pm. It takes about five minutes to explore. There is no entrance fee.

To reach Mankoji Temple take the Tokyo Sakura Tram to Higashi-Ogu-sanchome Station. It is a three-minute walk from there.

Take a moment to appreciate the history and beauty of Mankoji Temple. Notice the blend of old and new. Remember the temple’s journey through the centuries.
