Journey with me to the heart of Tokyo, to the Seikō-ji Temple. This isn’t just another temple. It’s a starting point. A place of connection to a rich tapestry of Buddhist tradition woven through the city. On November 22nd, Reiwa 6, Seikō-ji became the launchpad for a special pilgrimage. Imagine, a guided walking tour, complete with audio aids, winding its way through several temples. Starting at Seikō-ji, the path led to Eikō-ji, then onto Gensō-ji, followed by Shōkō-ji, Yakushin-ji, and finally culminating at Eijō-ji. This pilgrimage, known as the “Memorial Pilgrimage,” wasn’t just a walk. It was an experience. Participants received a limited edition vermillion stamp as a keepsake, a tangible memory of their journey. Seikō-ji, nestled in Nishiasakusa, played a pivotal role in this event. It served as the gathering point, the place where the journey commenced. The temple grounds buzzed with anticipation as participants arrived, ready to embark on their spiritual adventure. They checked in at Seikō-ji at 12:30 pm, the starting point of the pilgrimage. The walk itself began an hour later, at 1:30 pm. The pilgrimage concluded at 4:00 pm at Eijō-ji. Even with the possibility of rain, the pilgrimage was set to go on, with alternative plans for indoor slide presentations within the temple if needed. The cost of the pilgrimage was 1500 yen, payable in cash on the day. This event underscores Seikō-ji’s role not just as a place of worship, but as a vibrant community hub. Seikō-ji at Nishiasakusa serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of Tokyo’s temples and their enduring importance in modern life.
