Lost in thought, consider this. Jorenji Temple offers a tranquil escape. It lies amidst Tokyo’s energetic atmosphere. This temple houses the Tokyo Daibutsu. It is also known as the Great Buddha of Tokyo.

Jorenji Temple provides a serene contrast to the city’s hustle. The temple’s history dates back around 500 years. While the Buddha statue is relatively new the temple is not. It was founded in the fifteenth century. The temple was originally part of the Nakasendo highway. This connected Edo and Kyoto.

Now, look to your right. You’ll see the magnificent Tokyo Daibutsu. It was built in 1977. It commemorates those who died in World War II. It also honors those lost in the Great Kanto Earthquake. The Great Buddha of Tokyo stands 13 meters tall. It weighs approximately 32 tons. It is the third-largest bronze Buddha in Japan.

Notice the temple gate. It stands at the top of a short staircase. Inside the gate, four statues stand guard. They protect the temple. They also guard the nearby Akatsuka Castle ruins.

During the Tokugawa regime Jorenji Temple gained importance. It became a shuinchi. This meant it was exempt from taxes. It was also free from government labor. Shogun Yoshimune Tokugawa once took shelter here from the rain. This happened during a falconry hunt. The Tokugawa family crest is visible throughout the temple grounds.

Jorenji Temple also features Enmado. This chamber houses the god of hell Enma. Here you will also find Datsue-ba. She is the old woman who strips clothes off the dead. Jyuou, the ten judges of hell, are also present.

As you explore the grounds discover unique stone statues. Samurai Takatora Todo is said to have brought them from Korea. Find the Seven Deities of Good Luck. Small onegai jizo statues offer a warm feeling.

Jorenji Temple becomes crowded during specific times. New Year holidays bring many. Cherry blossom season in spring is another popular time. Leaf viewing season in autumn also draws crowds. However, normally, it is rather tranquil. Incense smoke rises within the temple grounds. Pails with triple hollyhocks are neatly lined.

Jorenji Temple offers more than just a giant Buddha statue. It’s a place of local beauty. It has fascinating details. Take a moment to appreciate the equanimous pose of the Buddha. This statue watches over Tokyo. It offers peace in a busy world.
