Whispers of ancient rituals echo as we approach Taiso-ji. This small Buddhist temple in Shinjuku Tokyo hosts an Obon matsuri every mid-July. Taiso-ji formally known as Kasumizekiyama-Honakuin-Taisoji is a Jodo-shu temple. It is a branch of the Pure Land form of Buddhism.

Obon is a special time. The Japanese believe the departed souls return to Earth. Preparations include cleaning family gravesites. They also replace wooden tablets with ancestors’ posthumous names.

Imagine the scene during the festival. The temple grounds bustle with food vendors and game stalls. An area is cleared for the traditional obon odori. This dance welcomes the returned souls. Men and women dance together.

Now let me tell you about a serendipitous encounter. A traveler on their first morning in Japan hurried to a bank to exchange money. A temple caught their eye. It sat back from the main road. Red lanterns adorned the gate hinting at a festival. That was Taiso-ji.

They explored Taiso-ji taking pictures of the Buddha statue. They peered into the dark temple. A small Shinto shrine stood on the grounds. Behind the temple they found rows of stupas family graves. Fresh flowers and incense adorned many. Wooden tablets bore intricate Chinese characters. These were posthumous names of deceased family members. As they left they noticed preparations for a festival. A local revealed it was an obon matsuri.

Taiso-ji is located in Tokyo’s Toshima district. You can reach it via the JR Yamanote Line. Get off at either the Mejiro or Ikebukuro Station. It’s about a 10-minute walk from either station.

Taiso-ji is a temple with a cemetery. The price for a regular grave starts at 1.7 million yen plus the cost of the gravestone.

Taiso-ji belongs to the Soto Zen sect. The temple has facilities for memorial services a multipurpose hall a parking lot and facilities for long-term memorial services. Taiso-ji also offers facilities for storing ashes.

Choosing a final resting place is an important decision. Here at Taiso-ji you will find different options. There are traditional graves. You can also find options for eternal memorial services. Columbaria and tree burials are available too.

When selecting a gravesite consider these points. What type of grave suits your needs? Does the management system meet your expectations? What are the costs involved? Is the temple affiliated with your family’s sect? How easy is it to visit the grave?

At Taiso-ji the staff are ready to help you. They are available to discuss funerals memorial services and grave options.

Remember our ancestors guide us. Let us appreciate our lives and cherish each day. Reflect on the sacrifices of living beings. With gratitude offer prayers for their peace.

Taiso-ji is not just a temple. It is a place of remembrance reflection and connection. It connects us to our past and guides us toward the future. As you leave Taiso-ji carry with you a sense of peace and appreciation.
